Biography

Esther Login Libin was born Esther Lagovsky in 1893 in the Russian town of Slutsk in the old Lithuanian province of Minsk in what was then known as the Pale of Settlement and now is called Belarus. Her parents were Abraham Lagovsky born in 1858 and Libe Goodseit born in 1859. She was the youngest of Abraham and Libe's children and had five siblings: three sisters Gittlja born in 1876, Chisha born in 1881, Chaie born in 1881 and two brothers: Golulie born in 1885 and Max born in 1886.

At age 11 Esther and her mother Libe immigrated to America aboard the ship Zeeland. They arrived in New York on October 17, 1905 and joined Esther's father Abraham who had immigrated in late 1899 or early 1900, her brother Max who immigrated in 1903 and her brother Charlie who immigrated in 1904. Three other sisters came later: Sarah in 1906; Anna and her son Harry in 1907 (they joined Anna's husband Samuel Lewow who had immigrated in 1904); Gertrude (Gussie) and her children Dora, Sadie, Herman and Rose in 1913 (they joined Gertrude's husband, Louis and son Max who had immigrated in 1904). This staggered pattern of immigration was not unusual for Jewish families immigrating from the Pale during this time period. Money for passage was scarce and husbands and older sons usually went first to raise money for the rest of the family to immigrate.

In another move common to many immigrants during this period, especially those from eastern Europe. the four younger Lagovsky siblings changed their names: Motil Lagovsky became Max Login, Golulie Lagovsky became Charles Login, Chaie Lagovsky became Sarah Login and Esther Lagovsky became Esther Login. They wanted their names to sound more American so they changed it to one they thought sounded Irish. However they didn't know how to Logan correctly so they spelled it Login instead!

Esther's adolescent years were spent in New York going to school and working to help support her family. In 1914 at age 20 she traveled out west to visit her brothers, Charles and Max Login. They introduced her to their friend, Joseph Libin.  Esther and Joseph were married 2 Oct 1915 in Butte, Montana.

Joseph H. Libin was born in 18 Dec 1885 in in Minsk, Lithuania, Russia.  He left Russia in 1896 at age 11 and traveled through eastern Europe to Paris, France where he possibly lived with a sister.  Joseph worked in Paris for three years as a cabinet maker, and then in 1899 at age 14 he went to England where he continued working as a cabinet maker. In 1907 at age 22 Joseph stowed away on a ship bound for America and landed in New York.  In 1908 he joined the U.S. Army and was transferred to Fort D.A. Russell in Laramie County, Wyoming.  Joseph served in the army for three years  He received an honorable discharge and became a naturalized citizen.

After his discharge from the army he worked as a mechanic with the Pullman Company in Dayton, Ohio and then started a furniture business. The business was destroyed in a flood that destroyed Dayton in 1913 and Joseph salvaged what he could and sold it for $325. Soon after that he went to Butte, Montana and placed the salvage money in a bank there. Within two weeks the bank had failed and he lost his money. He went to Spokane, Washington for a few months and worked in a furniture factory but returned to Montana and the Lewistown area and set up business as an independent buyer of hides and fur. After his marriage to Esther they homesteaded on the Missouri River, north of Lewistown for a short time.  Then Joseph worked in Great Falls for a time and also traveled out of Helena, Montana as an independent buyer of hides, furs, pelts, metals, etc.  Joseph loved the Lewistown area, however, and he and Esther decided to settle there.

In August, 1916  Joseph, along with Esther's brothers Charles and Max, incorporated the Lewistown Hide and Fur Company. In 1917 Joseph bought a lot on 1st Avenue South from George Wiedman and had a brick building built by Frank Hereford to use as the company's headquarters.  In the early 1920's, Joseph acquired Lewistown Auto Supply and in 1935 he purchased the old KP building.  Joseph bought the Burke Hotel in 1944 and sold it in 1948 to J. Herschel Hardy of the Hardly Hotel Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Joseph and Esther had four children while they were living in Lewistown: twin sons Herb and Bob born in 1916, daughter Sylvia born in 1920 and son Lester born in 1924.

Joseph was a strong supporter of the Eagles, Elks, Moose, and other local organizations and businesses. During the Depression years he helped many businessmen get back on their feet financially with his generosity and kindness.  He was always well thought of and respected by many townspeople of Lewistown and surrounding communities.  Esther was usually involved helping Joseph with his business enterprises and was a sharp businesswoman in her own right.

Joseph died 21 Jul 1950.  The Rabbi who officiated the funeral services traveled from Salt Lake City.  Joseph was buried in the Lewistown City Cemetery.

Esther lived fifteen years after Joseph's death, mostly in Lewistown with her daughter and son-in-law.  She died in San Mateo, California 10 Nov 1965 and is buried beside Joseph.

Obituary

Lewistown News-Argus: May 2002
A pioneer granddaughter who loved "The Big Sky" and the spirited people who called it home, comes home to rest in Lewistown. Helen was born December 21, 1925. The daughter of George Robert Lincoln and Helen Mark-Coature Lincoln, Helen lived her life away from the town of her birth, which she loved. A child of the World War II generation, she responded to the war effort undertaking studies to become a registered nurse, graduating in 1946. She married Robert Paul Libin in 1948. Their marriage produced two children and eventually led her to Seattle Washington, where she died. To her children she imparted her love of refinement, graciousness, beauty and her idealistic appreciation of life and its lessons. She is survived by her daughter Sydney and a grandson, Spencer, as well as a son Joseph of California. Services will be held Thursday, May 9th at 2p.m. at St James Episcopal Church in Lewistown.
