Fairview Training Center phased out

(Salem, November 16, 1998) Oregon's biggest and oldest center for people with developmental disabilities is being phased out. State mental health workers say finding new homes for residents at the Fairview Training Center hasn't been easy. But they've recently moved eight men - all with sexual histories ranging from rape to public masturbation - to two houses near the Oregon State Hospital. The men live less than a block away from a Head Start program where nearly 60 preschoolers are enrolled. So far, parents and teachers say they aren't concerned. Officials have assured them the their new neighbors will be closely monitored.
