Flood victim was lottery winner

Henderson resident Harold "Mel" Dittmer bought a California lottery ticket in 1995 after having a feeling that he was in for a spell of good luck. Days later, his came true when the six-number ticket purchased in San Bernardino raked in $9 million. He and his mother, Cordelia Turnidge, ended up splitting the winnings. Just two years after becoming a multimillionaire, Dittmer died Sunday in the Henderson flood. The 67-year-old was swept away in a current of rainwater that rushed through an upscale neighborhood on Skyline Road at Tamarack Drive, near where his mother lives. "It's a terrible, terrible tragedy," said Bob McClone of the Las Vegas office of Teamsters Local 631, where Dittmer served as vice president for six years before winning the lottery. "He was very self-reliant, and he was a friend to anyone in need. If he liked you, he would be there for you."
Witnesses and Clark County authorities said Dittmer, who lost an arm as a boy, was overcome by floodwaters as he tried to move his older-model pickup out of the rushing water on Skyline. McClone said despite being wealthy, Dittmer could never part with the old truck. "He was still driving the truck he owned before he won the money," McClone said. "He just had it repainted and replaced the engine. That's the way Mel was. He was not a glitz-type guy. The money didn't change him a bit." Norma Minas, public information officer for the California State Lottery, said Dittmer told lottery officials he and his mother planned to invest their winnings in real estate. His winnings, which are paid annually, will now be forwarded to his estate.
