Exerts from the hard to read Geneseo Republic obituary
The following obituary is received of Vernon L. Wolf, whose tragic death occurred Sunday, May 8, 1927 at the farm home three miles north of Hooppole. Vernon L. Wolf, the youngest son of Jacob and Jennie Wolf, was born near Hooppole, Ill on December 3, 1896 and passed out of this life on May 8, 1927. He was aged at the time of death 30 years.  He received his education in the rural schools near Hooppole, where he spent his entire life, except when he enlisted the World War.  He was a volunteer in the War.  He enlisted as a volunteer in the United States Army on April 1918 and served as a wagoner.  He was discharged on February 10 (?), 1919.  He was sent overseas on December 7, 1918 and returned January 1(?), 1919. Vernon did more than many other young men during the time he served in the United States Army.  He entered the army as a clean young man and came out of the war clean with no bad habits. When a boy he publically confessed his faith in Christ and joined Calvary United Evangelical Church. He was an ambitious young man ready to help anyone who was in need and ever willing to make a sacrifice in order to help anyone who called on him.  He was of a very nervous disposition and his actions in life were frequently determined on the impulse of moment, without weighing the question seriously; and because of this, the entire community was shocked when they heard of the news of his sudden death last Sabbath morning. The members of his family, brothers and sisters have the sincere sympathy of this community in this their sad bereavement. He was unified in marriage to Miss Marie Johnson on February 22, 1922.  To them two children were born—Gerald Frederick and Verbetta Alma.  Besides his wife and children he leaves to mourn four brothers, Herman, Albin, LeRoy and Fred all of Hooppole:  two sisters Mrs. Michael Houch and Mrs. Joseph Polson of Hooppole; and a large number of relatives and friends. The father, mother and one brother and sister preceded him in death. The funeral service was held last Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Calvary United Evangelical church.  Rev. W.P. Berge of Waterman, Ill officiating.  Interment was made at the Hooppole Zion Cemetery.
