Biography

Eugene Boise Grabenhorst was born on 14 December, 1894 in Dayton, Webster, Iowa, the sixth born and fourth son of William Henry and Eva Haight Grabenhorst's eight children. He was given the middle name of Boice which was his maternal grandmother's maiden name. 1902, William and Eva and their family moved to Oregon from Iowa. They purchased the Frank C. Baker farm, consisting of three hundred and twenty-seven acres located four miles south of Salem in the Pringle area of Marion County. A highway intersection incorporating the farm area would later be mapped as Grabenhorst Corners. In 1910 William and Eva made the decision to subdivide the farm and sell it in small tracts of five acres while they moved into the city of Salem. That same year William and his older son, George Henry Grabenhorst, opened up W.H. Grabenhorst & Co. Real Estate in Salem to sell the tracts. The company was very successful and would go on to become a prominent real estate company in the Salem area.  

Eugene attended public schools in Iowa and then Capital Business College in Salem where he studied civil engineering. Upon graduation he worked as a civil engineer for seven years with the Oregon State Highway Department for seven years until he enlisted in the army in 1918. He was assigned to duty with the the Twenty-second Army Engineers in Europe for nine months. After his honorable discharge he returned to Salem and in July, 1919 he joined his brother, George, in W.H. Grabenhorst & Co Real Estate. In addition to being a successful realtor, Eugene was active in civic affairs. He served two terms as a member of the Salem city council and one on the then Salem water council. He was a long-time member of the Salem Lions club and past president of the organization. He was also a member of the Salem Chamber of Commerce, American Legion, Elks club, and the Salem Realty Board

Eugene married Helen Marie Harris, daughter of William Henry Harris and Nellie L Perry of Salem on 16 July, 1919. A year later, on 9 April 1920, their only child, Anna Mae, was born. On 11 October 1947 Eugene died in the hospital after he suffered a heart attack at his home three days earlier. He was 52. After his death, his widow Helen married Earl Oberg in 1970. She died on 19 May, 2000 in Lincoln City, Oregon.

Eugene's daughter, Anna Mae Grabenhorst , was born was born on 9 Apr 1920 in Salem. She married Donald James Dawson, son of George Frederick Dawson and Minnie Melvina Johnson, on 25 Aug 1941 in Salem. Donald was born on 18 Mar 1915 in Joseph, Oregon. Anna Mae met Donald while they were attending Oregon State College where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and he was a member of Alpha Chi Rho fraternity.  After their marriage, Donald taught industrial arts in the Salem schools and worked at Grabenhorst Bros. Real Estate. He later worked as an industrial arts teacher at Fairview Hospital and Training Center while he also operated his fishing tackle business, Chief Joseph Products.  His Oregon Diver, designed to sink a fishing line without adding the usual degree of weight required, is beginning to sell on an international scale at the time of his death on 9 February 1971. Anna Mae and Don had three children: Donald was born on 20 Sep 1941 in Salem and died on 6 Aug 2000 in Lebanon, Oregon at age 58. He did not marry or have children. Kathleen born in 1944 and married Darrell Allison. They had two children: Heather and Cord. Sandra born in 1946. She married Richard Keeney in 1966. They were divorced and had no children.

The marriage of Miss Helen Harris and Eugene Grabenhorst was solemnized Wed afternoon July 10th at the Presbyterian parsonage, Reverend Anderson officiating. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harris of 644 Center street, and a graduate of the Salem high school class of 1917. For the past year she has been employed in the office of the U.G. Shipley Company. Mr. Grabenhorst recently returned from service overseas where he was a member of the 22nd Engineers. The couple will make their home in Salem, Ore. where the groom is connected with the State Highway Department.

Miss Anna Mae Grabenhorst has announced August 25 as the date of her marriage to Donald Dawson of Silverton, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Dawson of Joseph. The ceremony will be solemnized at 2:30 o'clock that afternoon in the chapel of St. Paul's Episcopal church with Rev. George H. Swift officiating. Miss Grabenhorst is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Grabenhorst. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi at Oregon State College. Mr. Dawson is a graduate of Oregon State College and a member of Alpha Chi Rho.

Realtor Eugene Grabenhorst Dies in Hospital
Eugene B. Grabenhorst, 52, 210 E. Washington street, prominent Salem realtor and civic leader, died in a local hospital Saturday at 8:20 p.m. from a heart attack suffered in his home Thursday. Funeral services will be held in the Clough-Barrick chapel Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Grabenhorst was a partner in the firm of Grabenhorst Brothers, Salem realtors, which recently completed sale of 27 houses near North Capitol and Center streets to make way for construction of a new shopping center. He served two terms as a member of the city council and one on the old water council. He was a long-time member of the Salem Lions club and past president of the organization. He was also a member of the Salem Chamber of Commerce, American Legion, Elks club, and the Salem Realty Board. Grabenhorst was born in Dayton, Iowa, on Dec. 14, 1894 and moved to Salem with his parents in 1902. He served with the 22nd army engineers in Europe from 1917 to 1919. In 1919 he married Helen H. Harris of Salem who survives him, and entered the Grabenhorst real estate firm the same year. Besides his widow he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Anna Mae Dawson of Salem; two sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Doane of Valsetz and Mrs. Lillian Busch of Yakima, Wash; three brothers, George Grabenhorst, Charles Grabenhorst and William Grabenhorst, all of Salem; an aunt, Carrie Grabenhorst, and three grandchildren all of Salem.

Heart Attack Fatal to Eugene B. Grabenhorst
Eugene B. Grabenhorst, 52, a leading Salem realtor and long an active factor in the civic life of the community, died at 8:20 o'clock Saturday night, having been taken to a hospital Thursday with a heart attack. His home was at 210 East Washington street. Grabenhorst, with his brother George H. Grabenhorst, was a member of the firm of Grabenhorst Brothers, originally known as W.H. Grabenhorst & Co., when the father of the present firm members was the senior partner. Grabenhorst served as a member of the city council for two terms and was later a member of the Salem water commission. He held memberships in the Salem Lions club, of which he was a past president, the Chamber of Commerce, American Legion, Elks and the Salem Realty board. In World War 1 he was with the 22nd army engineers in Europe from 1917 to 1919. He was born in Dayton, Iowa, December 14, 1894 and came with his parents to Salem in 1902. Upon his return to Salem after the first World War he was married to Helen M. Harris of Salem, and that year became a member of the real estate firm.
Besides his widow he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Anna Mae Dawson of Salem; two sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Doane of Valsetz and Mrs. Lillian Busch of Yakima, Wash; three brothers, George Grabenhorst, Charles Grabenhorst and William Grabenhorst, all of Salem; an aunt, Carrie Grabenhorst, and three grandchildren all of Salem; and a niece and several nephews all of Salem.

LINCOLN CITY - Helen M Grabenhorst Oberg, 86, of Lincoln City, died Thursday. A native of Verndale, Minn, she lived here three years, after living in Salem for more than 75 years. She was a member of the Wee Weeders and the South Salem Extension. Surviving is her daughter, Anna Mae Grabenhorst Dawson. Lincoln City. Services will be at 10:30 am Saturday at Virgil T Golden mortuary, Salem, and private entombment in Mount Crest Abbey Mausoleum there. Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Born in Salem, she worked as a nurse and enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and gardening. She married Donald Dawson in 1940; he died in 1972.Survivors include her daughters, Sandra Keeney of Neotsu and Kathy Allison of Grants Pass; a son, Stephen of Lebanon; and two grandchildren. EUGENE B. GRABENHORST

Eugene B. Grabenhorst, a business man of enterprise and ability, is a member of one of the well known real estate firms of Salem and also figures prominently in civic affairs. He was born December 14, 1894, in Dayton, Iowa, and his parents, William H. and Eva (Haight) Grabenhorst, migrated to Oregon when he was a boy of eight, reaching Salem on June 1, 1902. For eight years his father followed the occupation of farming in Marion county and in 1910 located in Salem. He joined his son (note: no, it was his brother), George H. Grabenhorst, in the real estate business and the partnership was terminated by the death of William H. Grabenhorst in 1923.In the acquirement of an education Eugene B. Grabenhorst attended the public schools of Marion county and the Capital City Business College. He also studied civil engineering and for seven years followed that profession. In 1918 he enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned to duty with the Twenty-second Engineers. He was ordered to the front and remained abroad for nine months. After his honorable discharge he returned to Salem and since July 7, 1919, has been one of the owners of the business of the. W. H. Grabenhorst Company, of which his brother, George H., is the senior partner. They have laid out a number of attractive subdivisions, doing much to improve and beautify the city and its environs, and their business has assumed large proportions, for the policy followed by the firm is one which commends itself to public confidence and support. On July 16, 1919, Eugene B. Grabenhorst was united in marriage to Miss Helen M. Harris, a daughter of W. H. Harris, an agriculturist, who came to Salem in 1912. To Mr. and Mrs. Grabenhorst has been born a daughter, Anna Mae. Mr. Grabenhorst has invested a portion of his capital in farm lands and is fully cognizant of the advantages and attractions of this favored region. He is an adherent of the republican party and has served on the city council since January, 1925. He acts as chairman of the sewer committee and exerts his influence to secure for the municipality those improvements which will enhance its desirability as a place of residence. He belongs to the Chamber of Commerce and is a past director of the Lions Club. He is also a member of the Salem Rod & Gun Club, the American Legion and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. Mr. Grabenhorst typifies the progressive spirit of the west and is a young man of fine character, esteemed and respected by all with whom he has been brought in contact
