Biography

William Henry Grabenhorst, the second son of Henry Christian Grabenhorst and Margaret Ann Layer, was born on 14 December 1859 in Baltimore, Maryland. Henry Christian had immigrated from Germany in 1849 and in 1866, after about 6 years in Pennsylvania, he moved to Baltimore, Maryland where he became a successful dairy farmer. He married William's mother, Margaret Ann Layer, on 6 March 1856 in Baltimore. Margaret had been born on 19 Mar 1839 in Chester County, Pennsylvania where her parents had settled after immigrating from Germany in 1834.

William attended public schools in Baltimore and after graduation attended Pennsylvania College at Gettysburg for three years. He then went on to Eastman College in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1878. It was in Poughkeepsie that he met his future wife, Eva Haight. daughter of Henry W Haight and Adeline J Boice. After completing his coursework at Eastman College he worked during 1881 and 1882 as a copper plate printer with the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey in Washington, D.C. He and Eva were married on 22 Sep 1881 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Newburgh, Orange, New York.

Eva was born on 29 Oct 1861 in Washington, Dutchess, New York. Her father and mother were from long time Quaker families who had been early settlers in New York. Eva's mother, Adeline Boice Haight, had died in 1868. Eva was seven when her mother died and she and her older sister Lillian age eight were sent to live with their grandmother, Sarah Wheeler Haight, on a farm near Milltown, about 20 miles from Poughkeepsie. Her brother Harrison was ten and continued to live with their father who remarried several years later. (for more information on Eva's family see the section Family History of Eva Haight)

William and Eva Moved to Dayton, Iowa in 1883 where they farmed for nineteen years. During those nineteen years they had eight children: Anna born in 1883, Lillian born in 1884, George born in 1887, William (Bill) in 1890, Charles born in 1892, Eugene born in 1894, Nell born in 1897 and Evelyn born in 1901.In 1902, William and Eva and their family moved to Oregon from Iowa. They purchased the Frank C. Baker farm, consisting of three hundred and twenty-seven acres located four miles south of Salem in the Pringle area of Marion County. A highway intersection incorporating the farm area would later be mapped as Grabenhorst Corners. In 1910 William and Eva made the decision to subdivide the farm and sell it in small tracts of five acres while they moved into the city of Salem. That same year William and his older son, George Henry Grabenhorst, opened up W.H. Grabenhorst & Co. Real Estate in Salem to sell the tracts. In 1919 William's son Eugene joined the company after his return from France in World War I where he had served with the Twenty-second Army Engineers. W.H. Grabenhorst & Co. Real Estate was very successful and went on to become a prominent real estate company in the Salem area.

Tragedy struck William and Eva on 20 April 1913 when their daughter Anna died of peritonitis five days after giving birth to her son, Robert Johnson. Roberts's father, Hiram Johnson III, was was bereft after Anna's death and with no way to care for an infant, he left Robert in the care of his grandparents. Robert was formally adopted by William and Eva on 13 Oct 1914 with the consent of his father.

William died 26 Sept 1923 in Salem. Eva died five and a half years later on 4 Apr 1929 in Salem. They are buried in City View Cemetery.

History of Oregon, Vol. 2; The Pioneer Historical Publishing Company, pub. 1922, page 19

W. H. GRABENHORST. William H. Grabenhorst was born in Baltimore, Maryland, December 14, 1859, and is the son of Henry C. and Margaret A. (Layer) Grabenhorst. The father of Mr. Grabenhorst was born in the province of Braunschweig, Germany, and emigrated to the United States in 1847. He is still living at the advanced age of ninety-two years, but the mother died on the 26th of May, 1921, at the age of eighty-two years. She was born in Chester county, Pennsylvania. Mr. Grabenhorst was educated in the public schools of Baltimore, Maryland, and was also a student three years at the Pennsylvania College at Gettysburg. His introduction into business was as a member of the United States coast and geodetic survey at Washington, D. C. On the 22d day of September, 1881, he was married to Miss Eva Haight, of Dutchess county, New York. In 1883, accompanied by his wife, he settled in Webster county, Iowa, where he engaged in farming. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Grabenhorst: Anna A., Lillian M., George H., William H., Charles W., Eugene B., Nell C. and Evelyn I., all of whom are now living except Anna A. In 1902 Mr. Grabenhorst and family moved to Marion county, Oregon, and purchased what was known as the Frank C. Baker farm, four miles south of Salem, consisting of three hundred and twenty-seven acres. He farmed this tract of land for a number of years and was very successful in this line of work. Thinking it was for the best interests of himself and family, he subdivided this tract of land and sold the same in small tracts of five acres. The amount he received from these sales justified his judgment in the matter. In 1911 Mr. Grabenhorst moved from his farm to Salem, where he engaged in the real estate and loan business. He is an enterprising business man. He has subdivided over two thousand acres of land, which has greatly promoted the development of the city of Salem and the country adjacent thereto. His success in life has been due to his energy and attention to the business in which he has been engaged. His pride In the development of the capital city of Oregon has been one of the principal causes of adding so much to the growth and prosperity of Salem.
