Evelyn married Lawrence Ernest Oberer, son of Frank Oberer and Lillian Williams, on 12 Nov 1919 in Marion County, Oregon. Lawrence was born on 6 Jul 1898 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon. Evelyn and Lawrence were divorced on 4 May 1933 in Multnomah County, Oregon. They had no children. Lawrence died in a car accident on 23 Mar 1935 in Lincoln County, Oregon at age 36 and was buried at Portland Memorial Mausoleum.

Evelyn next married Robert Bruce Doane, son of John Bradner Doane and Lola Coburn Olney, on 2 Mar 1941 in Clark County, Washington. Robert was born on 16 Apr 1912 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, died on 6 Nov 1979 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon at age 67 and was buried at Portland Memorial Mausoleum. They had no children.

Biography

Evelyn Iowa Grabenhorst was born on 3 Mar 1901 in Des Moines, Polk, Iowa, the last born and fourth daughter of William Henry and Eva Haight Grabenhorst's eight children. She was named Evelyn after her mother and Iowa after the state where she was born. In 1902, William and Eva and their family moved to Oregon from Iowa. They purchased the Frank C. Baker farm, consisting of three hundred and twenty-seven acres located four miles south of Salem in the Pringle area of Marion County. A highway intersection incorporating the farm area would later be mapped as Grabenhorst Corners. In 1910 William and Eva made the decision to subdivide the farm and sell it in small tracts of five acres while they moved into the city of Salem. That same year William and his older son, George Henry Grabenhorst, opened up W.H. Grabenhorst & Co. Real Estate in Salem to sell the tracts. The company was very successful and would go on to become a prominent real estate company in the Salem area.  

Evelyn attended local schools and then Capital Business College in Salem. After graduation she went to work for W.H. Grabenhorst & Co. Real Estate. She married Lawrence Ernest Oberer, son of Frank Oberer and Lillian Williams, on 12 Nov 1919 in Salem. The newly married couple made their home in Portland where Lawrence was employed as an accountant. After Evelyn's mother died in 1929, she and Bruce moved back to Salem to care for her nephew, Robert Johnson. Robert's mother, Anna, the oldest daughter of William and Eva Grabenhorst had died from peritonitis shortly after Robert was born in 1913. Robert's father was not able to care for him and he was adopted by William and Eva. William had died in 1923 so after Eva's death when Robert was only 16, Evelyn agreed to be his guardian. After Robert was on his own, Evelyn and Lawrence moved back to Portland. Lawrence and Evelyn had been having marriage difficulties for some time and in 1932 Evelyn filed for divorce. The divorce was finalized on 4 May 1933 in Multnomah County. Lawrence was killed two years later along with three companions when the car they were in went into the Siletz river in Lincoln county after a night of partying and drinking. After the divorce Evelyn started work at a series of savings and loan companies where she worked until her retirement in 1967.

On 2 Mar 1941, Evelyn married Robert Bruce Doane, son of John Bradner Doane and Lola Coburn Olney, in Clark County, Washington. They had met through Bruce's sister, Hazel, who was a friend of Evelyn's. Bruce had been a rancher in Aberdeen, Washington before he moved to Oregon.  He worked as a prison guard at the Salem penitentiary and later did mechanical maintenance at the Lloyd Center in Portland. Bruce died in Portland on 6 Nov 1979 at age 67 while visiting an elderly friend of his mother's. Evelyn died on 13 Aug 1990 in Scappoose, Columbia, Oregon at age 89. They ere buried at the Portland Memorial Mausoleum.

Statesman article of March 24, 1935
Rain and wind which obscured vision were said to have contributed to an early Sunday accident which sent an automobile with four passengers into the Alsea river six miles east of Waldport. Bodies of three of the victims were recovered and grappling operations continued for the fourth. The bodies recovered were identified as those of Mrs. Ruth T Bancroft of Beaver Creek section, Timothy O'Brian of Beaver Creek, and Mrs. E.E. Wetstone of Willis, Cal, said to be a sister of Mrs. Bancroft. Oscar (note: Lawrence) Oberer of Salem was believed to have drowned also.

SCAPPOOSE - Evelyn Doan, 89, formerly of Salem, died Aug. 13 in Portland. She was born in Iowa and moved to Salem the following year. She married Bruce Doan in 1935. He died in 1979. She worked for W.H. Grabenhorst & Co. and Grabenhorst Bros. Real Estate in Salem, later moving to Portland, where she worked for savings and loan institutions until retiring in 1967. Survivors include her sister, Nell McAllister of Salem. At her request no services were held. Entombment was in Portland Memorial Mausoleum.
