Biography

William Harrison Grabenhorst was born on 2 Jan 1890 in Dayton, Webster, Iowa, the fourth born and second son of William and Eva's eight children. In 1902, William and Eva and their family moved to Oregon from Iowa. They purchased the Frank C. Baker farm, consisting of three hundred and twenty-seven acres located four miles south of Salem in the Pringle area of Marion County. A highway intersection incorporating the farm area would later be mapped as Grabenhorst Corners. In 1910 William and Eva made the decision to subdivide the farm and sell it in small tracts of five acres while they moved into the city of Salem. That same year William and his older son, George Henry Grabenhorst, opened up W.H. Grabenhorst & Co. Real Estate in Salem to sell the tracts. The company was very successful and would go on to become a prominent real estate company in the Salem area.

William, or Bill as he was called, attended public schools in Iowa and Salem. After graduation at eighth grade, his parents wanted him to attend Capital Business College but he had no interest in business. Bill wanted to be a farmer. While starting up his own farm in south Salem, he worked on the farms at Fairview Home. On 4 Sep 1912 in Salem, Bill married Lena Delle Coburn, daughter of Waterbury Maynard Coburn and Susie Elizabeth Quimby. Lena had the nickname Bob after she bobbed her hair one summer.

Bill and Lena had four children. Their first son, William Coburn, was born 4 Sep 1912. Their second son, Don Gail, was born on 26 Jan 1920 and tragically died at six months of whooping cough on 8 Jun 1920. Their third son, Rex Avery, was born 1 Feb 1922. Then on 6 May 1925 they had a daughter, Roberta Ann, or Bobbie Ann as she was always called.

Bill and Lena lived and farmed on the same land for many years. Bill died on 3 Jan 1957. Lena stayed on the farm and later moved in with her daughter Bobbie Ann. She died 4 March 1975 in a Salem nursing home.

William Coburn, or young Bill as he was called when his father was alive, as born on 3 Oct 1914 in Salem. He started working in construction after graduating from public school. He enlisted in the navy on 16 Mar 1942. The year before he enlisted,  the Naval Construction Battalions had been formed. They were given the name Seabees after the initials C and B. Because they were expected to engage in combat as well as construction, their motto was To Build and Fight. Bill was deployed as a naval Seabee and saw action in Dutch Harbor and Okinawa. After being honorably discharged in 1945 he returned to Salem and worked at the State Highway Department for more than 30 years where he was a heavy duty construction equipment expert. Bill married Gladys M. Welsh, daughter of Fred Judson Welsh and Grace Adellia McCabe on Aug. 2, 1947 in Salem. Gladys was born on 23 Sep 1913 in Wibaux, Wibaux, Montana. Bill and Gladys wintered in Quartzite, Ariz., for many years. They loved to explore old mines, pan for gold, and spend time together. They were each other's right hand. Although they did not have children of their own, Bill and Gladys were closely involved in the lives of their nieces and nephews. Gladys died on 26 Nov. 2001 in Salem and Bill died six months later on 9 July 2002 in Salem.

Rex Avery was born on 1 Feb 1922 in Salem. He had two earlier short marriages to Enid Johnstead and Nina Fuson and then married Betty L. Wellman in 1957. Betty had been married previously to Otto Brown and had two daughters: Evelyn Kay born in 1948 and Donna Lee born in 1953. Evelyn and Donna took the Grabenhorst name after their mother married Rex. Rex and Betty had a stillborn son: Rex Avery Jr., on 23 Nov 1962. Rex enlisted in the navy on 26 Sept 1942 where he was deployed as a sub tender. After being honorably discharged in 1945, he went to work for Steelco steel company in Salem where he worked until retirement. Rex liked to hunt and fish on the Siletz River, the coast, and Eastern Oregon and travel to Quartzite, Arizona. Betty died on 1 Apr 1996 in Silverton. After her death Rex married Anne Howell Johnson on 6 Nov 2000. Rex died on 15 Oct 2012 in Silverton. Rex and Betty's daughter, Evelyn, married Jerry Joe Ditchen in 1972. They had one son, Todd Jason, born in 1973. Rex and Betty's daughter, Donna, died 17 Jun 2013 in Vancouver, Washington. She had no children.
