Württemberg Heimatschein (Certificate of Family Origin)

The Heimatschein was a German document similar to today's passport except it documented the city of origin  rather than the country of citizenship. The document was needed to travel from one area of Germany to another. The original purpose of the document was to identify what city someone came from in case they became indigent.  In that case the city of origin would be responsible for caring for the person.

This Heimatschein was issued to Adam Frederick Layer on 23 April 1832 in Württemberg, Germany.
